Eye Bag Removal
As you age, and perhaps because of diet and hereditary factors, many people develop drooping upper eyelids and bags beneath the eyes leaving them with a more tired look. Eye bag removal surgery (Blepharoplasty) is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures for both men and women in the UK. It is also frequently performed in conjunction with other facial surgery such as a face or neck lift.
A blepharoplasty is usually performed under a general anaesthetic but our surgeon may also discuss the possibility of a local anaesthetic with sedation (Twilight surgery). Incisions are made in the natural crease of the upper eye and as close as possible to the line of lower eyelashes as possible. Our experienced MySpa surgeon will then work beneath those incisions to eliminate excess fat and remove loose skin as appropriate.
The benefits of eye bag removal can be summarized as below:
- the face becomes lighter and younger
- renewed self confidence
- less self conscious
- the tired look that is given by drooping lower and upper eyelid bags is eliminated
- the eyes appearance gains luminosity and vividness
- the field of vision is significantly improved
It is important to note that the procedure is not permanent. Your skin will continue to age even though you have had this surgery. The surgery can, however, set back the age you appear quite dramatically. Your MySpa surgeon will explain what outcome you should realistically expect.
Following surgery, you will have bruising and puffy swelling around the eyes for approximately 10 days. We will do everything possible to minimise the subsequent visual impact of your surgery - any visible scarring will fade over time to become virtually undetectable.
Depending on the type of anaesthetic that you have, you may be discharged on the same day or you may have an overnight stay in one of our hospital.
We would recommend that you take 10 - 14 days off work to aid your full and speedy recovery. After that two-week period your life can return to normal - but you will have the additional boost to your self-esteem and confidence that your new appearance will give you.
MySpa offers a comprehensive and extensive post-operative care programme which will provide you with detailed instructions and follow-up appointments with your MySpa surgeon and our medical staff.

Your questions answered
Who can have eyebag removal surgery?
Blepharoplasty can enhance your appearance and your self-confidence. Patients suitable for eyelid surgery are men and women who are healthy, psychologically stable, and realistic about the change this procedure can give them. Most are 30 or older, but if droopy, baggy eyelids run in your family and you have inherited them, you may decide to have eyelid surgery at a younger age.
How is this procedure done?
Blepharoplasty usually takes one and a half to two hours, depending on the extent of the surgery.
In a typical procedure, the surgeon makes incisions following the natural lines of your eyelids, in the creases of your upper lids, and just below your lashes in the lower lids. The incisions may extend into crow's feet or laughter lines at the outer corners of your eyes.
Working through these incisions, the surgeon separates the skin from underlying fatty tissue and muscle, removes the excess fat, and he then trims sagging skin. The incisions are then closed with very fine stitches.
What can I expect from the surgery?
Your expectations need to be realistic. The positive results of your refreshing eyes and reduced tired appearance and the invisible benefit is of course the psychological relief. The surgery may enhance the patient's self-confidence.
What questions should I ask my surgeon about the blepharoplasty surgery?
For the first consultation with your surgeon, we advise you to prepare a set of questions that might help you understand the benefits, risks and performance of the procedure.
Here below are some questions to ask your surgeon regarding blepharoplasty:
Am I a good candidate for blepharoplasty?
What type of blepharoplasty will you perform?
Which do you recommend for me and why?
How should I prepare for the operation?
What benefits can I expect from the surgery?
What side effects and complications may I experience by undergoing the procedure?
Will I experience pain during or after the procedure?
How long will it take before I can start my normal activities following blepharoplasty?
My mother had eyelid puffiness after a certain age. How likely am I to have this as well?
How long will the results last?
What cosmetic procedures can be combined with blepharoplasty for a better effect?
What instructions should I follow after the operation?
