Your questions answered
- How does the laser work to remove hair?
-
A Laser, Variable Pulsed Light or Intense Pulsed Light emits highly
controlled flashes of light that are absorbed by the hair follicles
lying underneath the surface of the skin. The absorbed light heats the
hair, which damages or destroys the re growth potential of the follicle.
- What happens during my treatment?
-
Your laser hair removal treatment begins by trimming
away the hair above the skin. You will be asked to wear dark glasses to
protect your eyes from the bright light. Next a cold gel (similar to
ultrasound gel) will be spread over the treatment area. The laser
handpiece is then applied to your skin and pulses of light begin
disabling your unwanted hair. When the gel is removed much of the hair
is wiped off with it. The remaining hair in the treated area falls out
over the next week or two.
- Does it hurt?
-
No local anaesthetic is required and most people say it doesn't hurt
very much at all. Each pulse of light feels like a very slight sting or
pinch, similar to the snap of a rubber band. It's suitable even if you
have sensitive skin.
- What is involved in the treatment?
-
A cold gel is applied to the area to be treated. Once this has been done the laser "head" is placed on the area to be treated.
- How long does a treatment take?
-
The treatment is quick and an area of facial hair may take less than 60
seconds to treat, however, a man's back or a woman's legs may take up
to 60 minutes.
- How many treatments will I need?
-
You will need a course of laser hair removal treatments depending on
your skin and hair type. You will be informed of how long the course
will be at consultation. Some people with hormonal or medical
conditions may require more treatments.
- How long will it take for the hair to fall out?
-
The hairs will fall out naturally after treatment over the coming 1-3
weeks. The results are accumulative and much more visible after a
couple of treatments. It is recommended that you cut, shave or use
depilatory cream to remove the hairs whilst under going laser hair
removal treatment. This is better than waxing, plucking or threading
during your course, your practitioner will advise of this.
- Can all hair be treated?
-
The unique design of the laser offers you customised treatment
according to your hair colour, texture and the location of body hair.
Any hair with at least some pigment in it, black, brown, red and even
blond can be treated effectively.
- Can it treat all skin types?
-
Yes, our laser hair removal treatment is proven to effectively treat
unwanted hair on all skin types, including black, Hispanic and Asian.
- Are there side effects?
-
Side effects are rare. You may experience some slight reddening or
localised swelling at the treatment site, but this typically goes away
within hours. The skin can become darker or lighter following treatment
but will generally return to normal within a few weeks. Limiting sun
exposure before and after each treatment will minimise the risk of
complications.
- What kind of results should I expect?
-
Our new laser technology has been proven to create a permanent
reduction in the number of re-growing hairs following each treatment in
most skin types. The number of treatments required depends on several
factors related to your specific kind of hair and skin. A customised
treatment programme will be designed for you along with an estimate of
how many treatments you will need.
- Is it just under my arms that can be treated?
-
No. Any areas can treated except those next to your eyes. The most
common areas are upper lip, face, chin, bikini line, neck, chest, back,
stomach, legs, armpits and around the nipples.
- Is it suitable for everyone?
-
No. There needs to be a contrast between the hair colour and the skin
colour. In the few cases we cannot treat, we can offer electrolysis to
manage hair growth.
- Can the laser be used for other treaments?
-
Yes. Thread veins and skin rejuvenation.
- How do I know the clinic is safe?
-
Any person or clinic offering laser treatments is required to be
registered by the healthcare commission. They ensure that staff who are
using the equipment are fully trained and the environment is safe.
